Caledonian Adventures are an approved provider of the award governed by Sports Leaders UK
The Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership is a nationally recognised award
that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community. To plan,
prepare and supervise journeying on foot, in summer conditions, on low-lying rural countryside,
farm land, valleys or forest. To camp in sheltered locations and train participants to undertake in
these activities.
The award is the minimum qualification required by many Local Authorities and Operating
Authorities of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme to train and lead groups in the expedition
section of the Bronze and Silver Awards.
The award does not qualify people to lead groups in remote or mountainous areas, and people
wishing to lead people in these areas should obtain the appropriate awards ran by the MLTB. The
award is however now recognised by the MLTB and counts towards the Walking Group Leader
award and beyond.
The award has 09 learning outcomes that require to be met including 30hrs demonstration of leader
ship prior to assessment
1. Plan a walk for a group in lowland countryside
2. Prepare for a walk in lowland country side
3. Establish and maintain safe practice during walks and expeditions
4. Lead sessions to impart the knowledge and skills required to walk in lowland country side
5. Lead a walk in low-level country side
6. Navigation for a walk leader
8. Manage and develop personnel walking leadership experience
9. Camp craft for the expedition leader
These learning outcomes have to take place over a minimum period of 97 hours contact time with an
approved tutor. This time will include 2 expeditions, each with 2 days walking and 1 overnight camp.
This will count for 52 hours of the training. The remainder of the time allocated will be either on day
walks or theory sessions either in or out of a class room. In total the candidates will be required to
attend a minimum of 10 days training.
After this tuition period has been completed, there is a requirement for at least 30 hours voluntary
leadership experience with an external organisation under the supervision of an experienced outdoor
leader. An example of this might be training under supervision a bronze Duke of Edinburgh group.
There is a further consolidation period were the candidates must complete a further 8 days walking
prior to assessment. These walks must be of at least 6 hours duration planned and led by the
candidate in appropriate terrain.
Only after the above has been completed can the candidates be assessed for a minimum of 20 hours
and include a further 2 nights camping. This assessment must be at a tutor candidate ratio of 1:6
There is also a requirement for each student to obtain a first aid certificate prior to being certified. I
am able to provide this in-house so this has also been included in my final price. This will be in the
way of a 1 day emergency first aid course the time allocated to this will come from the 97 hours
